Natural Approach to Colon Cancer Prevention

As you may know, colon cancer is considered to be a preventable type of cancer. Thus, while you may consider looking into colon cancer attorneys, to be safe in the future, it is important that you start preventing it now.

Prevention is important because this specific type of cancer – also known as colorectal cancer – is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Because of this, you have to start making some changes in your life other than the regular screenings required.

Folate

Given that colon cancer is a food-related disease, expect to change your diet after this article. For example, you can start consuming enough folate – which has been shown to lower the risk of colon cancer.

Folate is a B vitamin that can be found in fortified cereals, spinach, asparagus, and similar food. The daily intake of folate should be of around 400mcg for adults.

Quercetin

Studies have shown that quercetin may be able to stall the growth of colon cancer. On top of that, a study made in 2010 involving 672 people showed that quercetin may be linked with a reduced risk of colon cancer.

Quercetin is an antioxidant that comes in supplement form and which can be found in onions, apples, berries, and similar food.

Tea

Drinking more tea will also help you prevent colon cancer, depending on what type of tea you choose to consume. For example, white tea has been shown to inhibit the growth of one of the colon cancer’s precursors – namely, aberrant crypts.

Green tea has been tested too – but, like white tea, on animals only. It was found to fight colon cancer, but further studies are required to see if they have the same effect on humans.

Diet Changes

We mention again that colon cancer is a food-related disease. All of the above should be added to your new diet – but you should also make some drastic changes to it if you want to prevent colon cancer.

For example, you should start:

  • Eat Less Red Meat – frequent red meat consumption has been shown to increase the incidence of colon cancer.
  • Eat More Garlic – studies have shown that garlic is one of those foods that can reduce the risks of developing more than just one type of cancer – especially gastrointestinal tract cancers.
  • Eat Plant Antioxidants – add fruits and vegetables to your diet with diverse colors, such as cranberries, pomegranates, oregano, avocado, spinach, apples, and so on.
  • Use Olive Oil – olive oil contains some plant chemicals that come with properties that can help your body fight cancer. This type of oil reduces bile acid, while also increasing the enzymes that regulate the cell turn over in the intestines’ lining, thus promoting healthy tissue.

The Bottom Line

A change in your diet – with some minor additions – can really make a change if you want to prevent colon cancer. Keep in mind that this disease is mostly caused by the foods of the modern age, which come with little to no health benefits for us.

Therefore, if you want to prevent colon cancer, it is highly recommended that you start a proper diet and cut back on unhealthy foods!
