Acne is a common problem faced especially by the youngsters in their teens but the hormonal acne that is developed in adults is the result of hormonal imbalance. Usually in teenagers the problem of acne subsides after sometime but when people face persistent and sever acne it is caused due to hormonal imbalance acne. So in extreme conditions it is always advisable to see your skin doctor so that he can help to cure the problem before it starts to create skin complexities and thus ruins your beautiful skin for ever. Research shows that acne causes stress to develop and also lower self esteem.

Acne occurs when the pores in the skin becomes plugged with oil, dirt and dead skin cells. Bacteria then thrive on these plugs, causing irritation and inflammation. Hormones may play a role in acne by triggering the production of excess oil, which is why acne tends to appear during puberty. Women may experience an increase in pimples during pregnancy, when starting oral contraceptives and just before or during menstruation. Without treatment, severe acne can lead to social isolation, emotional problems and permanent scarring.

Hormonal acne is a common cause of unwanted pimples and acne, both in teenagers as well as adults. The male androgen are the primary culprit, even in ladies suffering from acne. This is most evident when ladies get acne breakouts before their periods and mid cycle. Although ladies can have hormonal therapy to counteract this bi-monthly acne breakouts, men do not have this option. For them, good skin care and acne light therapy is the best option. Antibiotics and chemical peels may also be useful, just to complete the therapy. Every problem has a solution and so does hormonal acne. Here are some measures that will help you get rid of those gardens of zits.

Hormonal Acne Caused by too Much Oil:

Acne is spurred on by the overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands. These glands lie beneath the surface of the pore and produce oil called sebum. Typically necessary for the health of your skin, this sebum is not harmful to the skin, unless it is overproduced.

This excess of oil combines with dirt, debris, dead skin cells, and even pollutants in the air. Once this combination is complete, the pore of the skin is blocked and bacteria are allowed to infect the blockage.

What results is either a blackhead or a whitehead. Typically, there are three main ways to treat acne: remove items that cause pore blockages, kill bacteria before they can infect the pores, or use a hormonal acne treatment.

Hormonal Acne Treatment:

  • The first step in reducing acne is to throw those greasy creams away. Any cream which leaves your skin oily is a big no, as it will only increase the number of black heads and white heads which in turn will aggravate the acne. Comedone is the medical term for whiteheads and blackheads so non-comedogenic simply means not causing breakouts. Use only non-comedogenic preparations for the skin.
  • Using the right soap also plays a very important role in reducing acne. A soap that is only slightly drying will be best suited. Soaps with moisturizers or perfumes should be completely avoided.
  • If you think that sun exposure will reduce your acne, then you are grossly mistaken. Increased sun exposure can lead to acne rebound as the oil content in the skin increases. So stay away from the sun.
  • A simple home treatment for acne that does not require a prescription is benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is antibacterial, and seems to dry the oiliness of the skin. It is important to note that there are several over-the-counter treatments, but not all are effective and can lead to irritation. Therefore, make sure that you pick something that is largely made of benzoyl peroxide and has very few added ingredients.
  • However if none of these work, and irrespective of how hard you try, you just can’t get rid of those ugly pimples then a trip to the physician awaits. The physician will start you off with topical medication such as tretinoin and adapalene which make the surface protein of the skin less sticky.
  • If the acne is very severe then topical antibiotics like erythrocyte are prescribed. Oral contraceptives can also aid in reducing acne and are prescribed to women who like being on the pill.
  • The above mentioned drugs do not give complete clearing and most women still do not get the wondrous clear skin they always desired. If you are one of those women whose acne is still not completely eradicated then hormonal treatment for acne  is the way to go.
  • Hormonal treatment is very subjective and differs from patient to patient. The main idea behind it is to lower free testosterone and to protect the oil glands from this hormone.

Advice:

What’s important to remember about hormonal acne and each of these various acne treatments is that what works for one person may not work well for another. Also, as you can see, each treatment has its pros and cons. But the good news is that there are many different options to consider (and to research further) when on a quest for relief from hormonal acne.
