Summer is here and we’re sure you’re all enjoying your swims. Swimming is an excellent form of exercise, burning up to 200 calories per half hour of vigorous laps, notes, but all of the chlorine in traditional swimming pools can make your hair feel dry, brittle and even look green.
If you take up swimming as a regular activity, then there are chances of damaging your hair due to excessive chlorine present in the pool. It is after a few days you realize that your hairs have started to weaken and you observe a greenish tint in your hair after swimming classes.

- If you do not want to wear a swim cap, wet your hair before you swim. Use about a quarter sized amount of conditioner and run it through your hair. This saturates your hair so the chemicals in the pool water won’t be absorbed as easily.
- Use a rich, emollient conditioner after shampooing to counteract some of the drying after-effects of chlorine. Look for a conditioner specially formulated for dry hair, and while showering after your swim, start from the ends up and work the conditioner through your hair.
- Once you are done taking laps in the pool, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water and some good shampoo, to minimise the chlorine damage.
- Another important tip is the use of baby oil, coconut oil and olive oil. The principle is quite simple; all these oils make a protective layer over the hair and make them repellent to the chlorinated water of the pool.
- To keep the saturation of chlorine or salt water at a minimum, you need to rinse your hair with non-chlorinated water after every half hour.
- You can also find special shampoo that removes chlorine. However, when using this make sure you also are using a moisturizing conditioner. These special shampoos tend to dry out your hair when you first begin to use them.
- Comb your hair carefully: In order to avoid hair breakage, brush your hair carefully with a large-toothed comb. If you come across a knot, gently untangle it to avoid damage.
